Why? "...a school district policy states: "The valedictorian shall be the eligible student with the highest weighted grade-point average for four years of high school."
So the award will go to a kid who took 4 years to get a diploma and who has a lower GPA than Anjali. So the Dallas Texas school system is sending a message to its students that it is not important to be your best, but rather to play the game. Once again mediocrity carries the day.
Her father correctly assessed the situation when he said:
"I have not heard of any educational institution penalizing a student for excellence – for completing a demanding set of classes 'too quickly,' " said her father, Deepak Datta. "Anjali's experience will surely send a strong negative signal to other talented students trying to excel.
"They will most certainly be discouraged from trying to do their best – instead will be more focused on gaming the system."
This is absolutely sickening and while I can personally do nothing to stop Texas from being an ass in this situation, I do want to apologize to Anjali Datta for the way she is being treated. America has lost its sense of priorities and no longer seems to value greatness, but I am proud of you young lady. While this is wrong and I hope it is corrected, I promise that young women like you will rise to the top and outshine those who play the game.
If there is something I can do to help, please contact me and I will pitch in. Best of luck young valedictorian. I am cheering for you.
